(1/2) i just finished watching kill la kill and i literally cried SO MUCH. anyway i wanted to ask about a few things: (1) before going back to earth, what did senketsu mean when he said shinra-koketsu was "too" powerful and he looked like he was "loosing threads", (2) why did senketsu burn despite being able to withstand basically everything? couldn't he and ryuko safely return to earth while in their "battle mode"?, (3) who could've shot the scissors blade back to earth for ryuko to use? --

(2/2) and lastly, (4) why did ryuko leave the scissors blade when they left the town? thank you!

First of all, I apologize for the delayed response; I’ve been out of town.

Now, I see finale and OVA questions as good topics of conversation, since I think a lot is rather left open. As far as I know, none of these questions have ever been directly addressed by either the series or supplementary materials, so my responses probably lean a little more towards the headcanon than anything really all that concrete. Interested in hearing other thoughts about this!

But as for mine: I’ve always interpreted Senketsu’s line about Shinra-Koketsu being too powerful to mean that he couldn’t handle all its Life Fibers. Senketsu’s spent the whole series absorbing other Life Fibers and growing stronger, but everything has a limit. When he absorbs Shinra-Koketsu—which is by far the most powerful Life Fiber enemy he and Ryuko have ever faced—it’s finally too much. His body can’t handle it, and he falls apart.

I know it’s a popular interpretation that Senketsu dies wholly due to the Earth’s atmosphere, sacrificing himself so Ryuko can live. And I mean, I get it—Senketsu absolutely would die for Ryuko’s sake, and that’s something we’ve known since as early as episode 5 when he saved her from Tsumugu. It’s completely within his characterization to sacrifice himself for Ryuko, and a fitting (if tragic) end to his character arc.

But I’ve never really seen it that way. He’s shown in bad shape before he even reaches the atmosphere, losing threads as mentioned, and also sounding quite weak and frantic.

So I don’t really see it myself that he dies because he burns up. He dies because he was already falling apart from being overloaded with too many Life Fibers and wasn’t going to make it no matter what he or Ryuko did. I also think this is something he knows pretty much immediately after absorbing Shinra-Koketsu, which explains why he says they don’t have much time left–because he doesn’t, and he knows it. So he’s dying and falling apart and can hardly hold himself together and doesn’t have the strength to stay synchronized with Ryuko but he uses the last bit of life he has to see it that she gets to Earth safely.

If Ryuko and Senketsu are anything, they’re super protective of each other. I see Senketsu’s last moments as him doing everything in his power to assure to himself that Ryuko will be okay before his inevitable death as opposed to him deliberately causing his own death, and that’s also partly because their protectiveness goes both ways. Ryuko would never just let Senketsu totally sacrifice himself for her without fighting it. She’s the kind of person who’ll go the way of “I See Fire” and say, “If this is to end in fire/Then we should all burn together.” This is pretty much blatantly stated both times Ryuko defends Senketsu in front of Tsumugu, with her saying both times that if Tsumugu wants to kill Senketsu, he’s gonna have to kill her, too. And on top of that, though she yearns and craves for companionship like she gets with Senketsu more than anything, even late into the series it seems she’s still afraid if she deserves it, even flat-out saying so in episode 22 when she claims, “I don’t know if I deserve [Senketsu and Mako], but I sure as hell ain’t gonna let ‘em down!” So I could never see her letting Senketsu die for her so easily. She knows something’s wrong before he pushes her back to Earth, and though she tells him not to do anything crazy, she quickly realizes it’s too late. He’s not gonna make it, he’s falling apart, and there’s absolutely nothing she can do about it. (Except hold back her tears so it’s not her crying that he leaves with.)

As for the OVA questions… it’s hard for me to really say what’s happening with Senketsu, because I don’t particularly know. But I think the show was going for this idea of Senketsu helping Ryuko out from the afterlife, hence his tossing of her Scissors and his “ghost” that you see later in the fight. It’s… pretty confusing, though. I’ve discussed this a lot if you’re interested in seeing more conversations about it; here is probably the most succinct, but there’s more under the “OVA” and “Senketsu’s Death” sections on the analyses page, too.

Finally, from a narrative standpoint, Ryuko leaves the Scissors behind because she’s done fighting. The threats are gone, she’s ready to move on with her life, and she doesn’t need them anymore. I guess you could argue that this isn’t exactly the smartest thing to do considering Ragyo’s warning that Life Fibers will return one day, but the point of the OVA is all about graduation and moving forward in life. Ryuko can’t do that clinging onto her father’s Scissor Blades forever, so they sink to symbolize this. (And I mean, if she really needed them again, I doubt she’d have much trouble getting a hold of them, haha.)

From a production standpoint, I also see this as Trigger desperately trying to tell fans that there’s not going to be any season 2 or a sequel… but that might just be me ^^;
